It may take some time, effort, and a few bucks — but you can build a backyard fire pit with a few simple steps. With a high-quality, steel fire ring, a few pavers, the right tools, and a good plan, you can create an impressive backyard fire pit over the weekend. And when you have established your backyard fire pit, you can build an incredible entertainment space around it that is perfect for parties and celebrations. 1. Choose Your Location and Dimensions
The first step to build your backyard fire pit is to choose the location for your fire pit and choose the dimensions for your fire pit. You will want to choose a safe location that is a minimum of 15 feet away from any structures to prevent any accidental fires and find a steel fire ring that fits your desired space and makes room for friends and family.
2. Dig a Hole for Your Fire Ring
When you have decided on a location for your fire pit and picked a fire ring that fits your specifications, you need to dig a hole for your fire ring. Place your fire ring where you want it with a row of retaining or landscaping blocks around the outside and mark the outside of the ring — then dig a hole inside the marked line that is 7 inches deep.
3. Line the Hole with Sand
Sand will help create a stable and level base to build your fire pit on. Place at least a 1-inch layer of sand in the base of the hole and use the hand tamper to tamp it down tight and flat. Use the level to make sure the surface is level all the way around.
4. Build the Base for Your Fire Pit

6. Fill in the Gaps with Pea Gravel
You will want to fill in as many of the small gaps as possible to create the best base possible for you to build your fire on. Use the pea gravel to fill in the gaps at the base of the fire pit between the pavers or fire bricks.
7. Finish Building Your Fire Pit Surround
You have made it to the last step. Use the rest of your retaining or landscaping blocks to complete the fire pit surround. You can build the fire pit surround to your desired height and specifications to personalize your backyard fire pit area.
